Tja,

"UltraCard is producing a family of credit card-sized data storage devices and an inexpensive series of devices for reading and writing data to the Card. Capacities will increase over time as shown in Figure 1, below: UltraCard is available for market introduction now at 5 MB. MAGNACARD and NEXTCARD are under development with anticipated market introduction between 24 and 36 months after introduction of the UltraCard. The ULTRADRIVE™ series of card readers/writers will complement product introductions.

Figure 1: UltraCard Storage Capacity

Card Designation Storage Capacity

UltraCard™ 1 MB to 5 MB

MagnaCard™ 10 MB to 25 MB

NextCard™ 50 MB to 2 GB

Based upon average price per megabyte, UltraCard provides a superior value for its users. This value will increase over time with introduction of MAGNACARD and NEXTCARD.

The typical magstripe card today holds only a tiny amount of data. Nearly all of the smart cards on the market today hold only about one page of text. The UltraCard, ready for market introduction now, can accommodate up to 2,500 pages of text. This dramatic increase in storage capacity allows a single UltraCard to store:

* Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary (2,257 Pages) OR
* The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (1,312 Pages) OR
* Canterbury Tales by Chaucer (627 Pages) AND
* War and Peace by Tolstoy (607 pages) Used alternatively for storing complex documents such as photos or multimedia documents, UltraCard will accommodate:
* Up To 150 Color Photographs
* Up To 75 Full-Chest X-Rays

The capacity for data storage will increase dramatically with the introduction of MAGNACARD and NEXTCARD. Soon a business person will be able to duplicate all of the records stored in his personal computer and transport them on a Card carried in the wallet. He can access all of his records on any computer located anywhere in the world that is equipped with an ULTRADRIVE.

There are many specific applications for UltraCard technology. Due to the tiny storage capacity of existing credit card storage media and the high cost of implementation of other card storage technologies shown above, UltraCard will be able to open up many new markets. UltraCard applications include:

Figure 3: UltraCard Applications

Access Control/Security Cards Parts Lists

Credit/Debit/ATM Cards Passports/Immigration Cards/Visas

Customer Service/Order Records Production/Work-In-Process Control

Drivers License QC/Process Control Records

Drug Inventory/Dispensation Cards Replacement for Computer Floppy Disks, Flash, ZIP Cartridges

Healthcare Record Cards Retail Store Valued-Customer Cards

Identification Cards Stored Value Cards

Instrumentation Manuals Technical Manuals

Insurance Benefit Cards Time and Attendance Cards

Military Systems Maintenance Records Transcripts---Legal, Academic

Mug Shot/Arrest/Criminal Record Files Vehicle Service Record Cards

One-Shelf Libraries/Books on Cards Welfare Benefit/Food Stamp Cards

Many other applications for UltraCard are under investigation. Practically any application requiring data that is transported easily and accessed inexpensively can use UltraCard.

In addition the seamless ability to adapt UltraCard to existing credit cards (mag stripe plus UltraCard media) so that vendors can evolve over to UltraCard without technical difficulties will facilitate rapid market penetration.

High Levels of Security. Sophisticated encryption technology may be used on the UltraCard facilitated by the increased memory capacity.

Further, UltraCard’s exclusive license of Keepered Media Technology on magnetic cards will virtually eliminate accidental erasure and corrosion of data stored on the card due to exposure in the harsh consumer credit card environment, as well as prevent fraudulent duplication of information contained on the card.

How Does ULTRACARD Technology Work?
UltraCard uses well-tested, reliable and easy-to-produce technology in new and unique ways. Computer data storage using hard disk drives has become commonplace in the computer world. As the capacity for hard disk storage devices has risen over the past few years the reliability has increased and the price per megabyte has fallen dramatically. UltraCard uses this hard disk storage technology as the starting point for its new and unique products.

During its media manufacturing process UltraCard applies proprietary media to the back of a credit card in place of or in addition to the magstripe. This media is built up starting with a specially formulated base material followed by a layer of magnetic substrate topped off by an extremely durable protective layer. The resulting aggregate has a mechanical durability many times greater than any other type of credit card storage device. It is also between eight and ten times more resistant to demagnetization than the ordinary magstripe card.

The ULTRADRIVE read/write device reads from and writes to the Card in much the same fashion as a hard drive accesses a hard disk today. The ULTRADRIVE is no larger than an ordinary floppy disk drive and can be mounted internally in the standard peripheral bay in a computer, cash register or security device. ULTRADRIVE is also available as a stand alone Card reader for non-OEM applications or as a hand-held device for portable applications.

Transition from the UltraCard capacity of 5 MB to the NEXTCARD capacity of 100 MB will involve adapting higher density storage techniques and other innovations already present in the technology associated with high capacity hard drive storage. UltraCard expects to be able to keep pace with the market demands for increased storage capacity that it will create with the introduction of its new technology. "
