Communications Minister Candidate Poraz: If Cable Cos Don`t Bend They`ll Be Left Empty Handed
By Efi Landau

"As part of negotiations with [Prime Minister Ehud] Barak`s staff, we have requested the Ministry of Communications portfolio, the request has been accepted and we are a candidate," Member of Knesset Avraham Poraz confirmed today. However, Poraz added that he did not believe a narrow coalition will be established in the near future, as it cannot depend on the ten Arab members of Knesset after the past two days of riots in the Arab sector.

Poraz said he would support Bezeq and the cable companies` right to lease their infrastructures to competitors on the free market (unbundling), and the cable companies` right to separate their infrastructure from content.

"The cable companies received a license for a specific period of time, for content and infrastructure as one. The second stage must be separation. This doesn`t mean the cable companies can`t provide content, they may do so via subsidiaries. Of course, others may provide content over their infrastructure."

"The cable companies must understand that if they do not bend, they will lose this match, because after their licenses expire they may be left empty-handed," Poraz said.
