TV is Bigger Than the Web - Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown`s Peter Ausnit Initiates Coverage of the Enhanced TV Sector

NEW YORK, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown analyst Peter Ausnit today initiated coverage of three Enhanced TV stocks. Shares of OpenTV Corp. (Nasdaq: OPTV) ($32.25) were started with a STRONG BUY investment rating while shares of Liberate Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: LBRT) ($25.31) and Liberty Digital, Inc. (Nasdaq: LDIG) ($16.06) were started with an investment rating of BUY.

Ausnit believes that TV ultimately will be bigger than the Web as a vehicle for selling goods to consumers. "We believe that watching TV is the primary leisure activity worldwide and the primary driver of consumer spending," said Ausnit. "We believe that this will not change, despite the advent of the Internet. In fact, we expect interactive TV to marry many of the Internet`s benefits with the reach and impact of TV, creating an even more valuable medium."

But according to Ausnit, investors have been cautious on this sector in the past as performance has been disappointing. Now, he believes that with the approach of advanced digital set top boxes, the infrastructure will be in place for MSOs to layer on interactivity as a means of increasing revenue. "In our view, demand for greater channel choice and digital TV is certain, and TV will, in the next 10 to 15 years, convert from close to 100%-analog broadcast to almost 100%-digital broadcast worldwide," said Ausnit. "We expect the Web and TV to converge within the next five to 10 years as digital broadcasting paves the way for interactive TV and opens a multibillion dollar potential market."

Ausnit recommends that investors own these three winners in the interactive TV sector ahead of the news of rollouts and deployments. His 12-month price targets, based on a discounted cash flow analysis, are $50 for OpenTV, $35 for Liberate and $40 for Liberty Digital.
