Internet Appliances "Legend, National set-top box plays well in China market • Geode processor delivers programming flexibility, Internet access • set-top service product of National and Legend joint research facility Carving a niche for themselves in the Chinese market, National Semiconductor Corporation (Santa Clara, CA) and Legend Holdings Ltd. (Hong Kong) have worked together to develop a new set-top box that provides a broad range of programming and Internet access through the viewers TV set. The enterprising companies have already sold their first customer, the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Ltd. (Towngas). The Hong Kong-based utility will use the new set-top box for its iCare Internet-on-TV service. The service enables subscribers to surf the Web without a PC through the set-top box built around the National Geode GXLV processor. In the past year National has spent a lot time and energy on publicizing the Geode family of processors and developing devices to provide Internet access at all levels. This spring, they introduced Web PAD powered by the Geode GXLV processor. (See TPR, April 24, 2000, page 604.) The following month, National introduced their Geode GX1, a sub 1-watt processor for Internet Appliances and targeted at personal access devices, thin clients and interactive set-top boxes. (See TPR, May 22, 2000, page 779.) The GXLV processor features an x86 core and, according to National is compatible with more than 200 Web plug-ins as well as software and games. Power consumption ranges from 1 to 2.5 watts." Das ist doch wohl ein Riesen - Zukunftsmarkt!!!
