"AMD releases speedy chips
Gateway, Compaq, HP among those offering PCs with 1.2 GHz Athlon
October 17, 2000: 12:01 a.m. ET

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Advanced Micro Devices on Tuesday extended its lead in its ongoing battle with industry leader Intel for bragging rights as the company that offers the fastest PC microprocessors.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based firm said Tuesday it has begun shipping an "Athlon" processor that operates at 1.2 gigahertz, or 1.2 billion cycles per second, and an 800 MHz "Duron" processor.

Gateway is currently offering 1.2 GHz Athlon systems, while other leading PC vendors including Compaq and Hewlett-Packard are expected to offer similar systems in the coming weeks, AMD said.

For more than a year now, AMD (AMD: Research, Estimates) has battled with Intel both for bragging rights as the company that has the fastest processors and, increasingly, for a growing share of the overall PC processor market. AMD introduced the Athlon to compete on the high-end with Intel`s (INTC: Research, Estimates) Pentium III chips. The Duron was meant to compete with Intel`s Celeron.

Those processors have been giving Intel a real run for its money since they were introduced more than a year ago. When AMD reported its latest quarterly financial results last week, W.J. Sanders III, its chairman and chief executive, said the company will sell out its production of those chips.

He also said the company "will easily exceed" its earlier forecast of selling a total of 25 million PC processors this year, with the final tally projected to be approximately 28 million units. That compares with 18.8 million units last year.

The company also has been aggressively turning up the speed of its chips, making them more attractive to a wider range of customers.

"A year ago today, the fastest processor in the marketplace was a 700 MHz Athlon from AMD," said Mark Bode, marketing manager for Athlon and Duron products. "With this announcement, our slowest processor in the Athlon and Duron family is 700 MHz."

Meanwhile, Intel has suffered an embarrassing series of missteps recently. In the past two months, Intel has recalled its highest speed Pentium processors; canceled plans for its low-end Timna processor; been dogged by reports its new Pentium 4 computer chip will be delayed; and has scarce supplies of its much-touted high-end Pentium III chips.

Intel is expected to release the Pentium 4 later this year at speeds starting at 1.4 GHz.

Pricing concerns loom

In its official release, AMD said the new 1.2 GHz Athlons are priced at $612 in volumes of 1,000. But in a report which warned of a looming pricing war between AMD and Intel, Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Charlie Glavin said Monday that the company has been selling the chips to some customers for as little as $180.

AMD also has been aggressively cutting prices on its other high-end Athlons in recent weeks, which Glavin said appears to be a pre-emptive move on its part to capture as much market share as possible prior to Intel`s launch of the Pentium 4.

Salomon Smith Barney analyst Jonathan Joseph voiced a similar warning about the pricing environment in the PC processor market Monday, and shares of both Intel and AMD fell sharply.

Intel shares, which have shed more than half their value since the company warned last month that it would come in short of third-quarter earnings expectations, fell another $4.69 to $35.69 Monday. Meanwhile, AMD finished $1.50 lower at $20.38.

AMD`s Bode shrugged off concerns about a pricing war. "We don`t see a war, and we don`t see starting a war," he said. "We`re doing what we`ve been doing all along, which is making sure we can build the best systems out there."

But SG Cowen semiconductor analyst Drew Peck has been predicting a pricing war between the two companies for more than six months, citing the level of competition between them over the past year as well as a softening PC market.

"The biggest problem Intel has is they have much greater competition than they were used to dealing with; execution issues that were in part brought on by increased competition; and you`ve got the PC market, which is stagnant at best," Peck said. "You could see this one coming."
