"AMD starts shipping 1.2 gigahertz Athlon chip
(UPDATE: Recasts, adds background)

SUNYVALE, Calif., Oct 17 (Reuters) - Computer chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NYSE:AMD - news) said on Tuesday it had begun shipping its 1.2 gigahertz Athlon processors to major computer companies, reclaiming the lead for the fastest microprocessor on the market.

The chips, priced at $612 each, are expected to be available in computers made by Compaq Computer Corp (NYSE:CPQ - news), Gateway Inc (NYSE:GTW - news), and Hewlett-Packard Co (NYSE:HWP - news).

The company also said it would start shipping 800 megahertz Duron processors, its lower-priced brand of microprocessors at $170 each.

Analysts expect the company to have a strong fourth quarter. Although it failed to take any market share way from its archrival Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) in the first half of the year, analysts say Sunyvale, Calif-based AMD may have gained ground in the third quarter.

AMD and Intel have been in a seesaw battle to produce that fastest processors, the brains of personal computers.

The first shipments of the new AMD chips come against the backdrop of a fierce price war and declining demand for microprocessors.

``The microprocessor market remains weak, with Intel accelerating by two weeks price cuts of low-end Pentium III`s,`` Salomon Smith Barney analyst Jonathan Joseph wrote in a note to clients.

AMD shares fell nearly 7 percent or $1-7/16 to $20-3/8, in Monday`s trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares reached a 52-week high of $48-1/2 in June and a 52-week low of $8-3/16 nearly a year ago.

Intel saw its shares plummet nearly 12 percent on Monday."
