Pace takes digital cable into the future at BCE2000
UK’s first demonstration of Pace’s wireless home networking technology

BCE 2000
17 – 19 October, 2000

Pace Micro Technology, a pioneer of digital technology for the home, is demonstrating the future of cable technology today, as the company unveils its evolution of the digital cable set-top box into the gateway for the networked home to visitors at BCE 2000.

Pace is exploiting the full capability of its digital cable technology as it evolves the cable gateway as a portal for interactive communications into and around the home. As demonstrated at BCE 2000, Pace’s cable gateway will enable electronic devices to link wirelessly or through existing wiring, within the home, and communicate with the outside world via the cable gateway’s high bandwidth datapipe.

As part of this home gateway strategy, Pace is demonstrating for the first time in the UK, some of its networking technologies - Gateway Expander and pcConnect. These technologies will enable Pace’s cable gateway to reach all corners of the household, including the PC, games consoles, kitchen appliances and security systems.

Pace’s Gateway Expander technology establishes the home network infrastructure by bringing together wireless, wireline and powerline networking technologies into a fundamental building block. Acting as a wireless base station, using DECT technology for connectivity, it enables two-way communication from the cables broadband network external to the home, to peripheral electronic devices connected internally to the home network. It can be used as a stand-alone component or integrated into the cable gateway.

One of the first devices to be connected via the Gateway Expander to the cable gateway will be the PC. A wireless link from Pace’s Gateway Expander to pcConnect provides high-speed Internet access to the PC via the cable gateway’s integrated cable modem. Pace’s use of DECT wireless technology within the networked home, combined with the gateway’s cable modem enables an effective data rate of up to half a megabit per second, to be delivered up to ten times faster than a standard PSTN modem.

Another device that can be wirelessly linked to Pace’s Gateway Expander is the TV. Pace is developing tvConnect technology to enable high-speed interactivity and Internet access between any secondary TV in the home and the cable operator’s network via the cable gateway.

Pace is also developing a range of handheld Interactive Display Devices (IDD) for the networked home. These link to the Gateway Expander to enable access to interactive services, such as home shopping, video conferencing, web surfing and home appliance control, away from the main TV screen. Pace’s IDDs typically have a touch-sensitive display and can vary in size and functionality.

One of the first products in the IDD range will be Pace’s Shopping Mate. This hand-held IDD with integrated barcode scanner offers a fast, accurate and convenient way of creating shopping lists away from the main TV screen. Consumers simply use Pace’s Shopping Mate to scan a product’s barcode and add it to their shopping list.

Once compiled, the list is transferred to the retailer or content aggregator via the cable gateway and the goods are delivered to the customer’s home. Pace is demonstrating a version of this hand-held device at BCE 2000, which will show how users can undertake on-line spontaneous purchasing via interactive advertising.

“As a proven leader in the design and deployment of cutting-edge digital cable technology, Pace is perfectly positioned to lead the evolution of the digital cable set-top box into an even more powerful device – the cable gateway, that can deliver audio, video and data into, around and out of a home” said Chris Boyce, Head of Strategic Business Development.

“Pace’s cable gateway technology will maximise the reach of digital cable TV services throughout the home – changing the way consumers access traditional services such as home shopping and banking and creating a wealth of new revenue-generating opportunities for cable operators to exploit. The technological capabilities of the cable gateway are endless and we are already working with cable operators, service providers and content providers world-wide, to ensure we maximise its full potential.”

Das hört sich allerdings schon nach 4. Generation an.
