"because the rollout of digital and interactive TV products and services is only in the embryonic stage."

Scientific-Atlanta`s More than a Tad Too Steep
By Richard Wilson

What Happened?
Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA - news) on Thursday announced record fiscal first-quarter bookings, revenue, operating profit, backlog, and cash. Revenue increased by 71% to $597 million, while the company`s backlog increased to $889 million from $550 million a year ago. The performance was driven by continued strong demand by cable companies aggressively expanding their service offerings to boost sluggish sales growth. These offerings include broadband services that support digital cable and interactive TV services.

What It Means for Investors
We believe the company has a bright future because of surging demand for digital and interactive TV products and services. But although there is no questioning Scientific-Atlanta`s impressive performance, at a P/E north 50, the company`s shares are probably too expensive, in our opinion.

Scientific-Atlanta is poised for an extended period of growth because the rollout of digital and interactive TV products and services is only in the embryonic stage. Paul Kagan Associates estimates that there will be 45 million digital cable subscribers by 2005 and as many as 59 million by 2010. Total demand for set-top boxes over the next 10 years could range from a conservative 90 million to as many as 200 million. The higher estimate is predicated on both more than one set-top box per subscriber as well as on replacement demand for new and better set-top boxes. The convergence of TV and the Internet could be a further impetus for growth, although it will likely attract new and aggressive competitors to the industry.
