TomsHardware verteilt schon im vorab die Plätze unter P4 und K7/DDR:

With double data rate memory in hand, the evolving Athlon should closely pace the Pentium 4 in clock speed, while significantly outdistancing it on legacy business applications.

However, Intel holds a vast fortune and can afford wage a war of attrition for at least another year.

By the way, word of mouth suggests that AMD itself considers ALi`s upcoming DDR SDRAM chipset to be a very good performer, perhaps even better performing than the AMD760

AMD`s wild success this year has caught the attention of computer giant Sun Microsystems. Additionally, the server heavy computer company is purportedly very impressed with the potential performance of the Sledgehammer server processor which, the rumor goes, is already in alpha silicon. Sun is supposedly considering server lines based on this 64-bit processor.

...The 64-bit chip will supposedly be ready to launch in early Q3 of 2001 if necessary. Also, for those worried about AMD`s production constraints, the Sledgehammer will allegedly be produced on an SOI process in an IBM copper fab. These are hefty rumors!

AMD representative, Bob Mitton. Mr. Mitton disclosed in an interview with the Japanese PC Watch that the first Hammer has just now completed layout and should reach "tapeout" before the end of the year. Hardware sampling should begin early next year.

From Intel Inside to Inside Intel

Intel`s CEO, Craig Barret made headlines recently with his strong words of regret directed against the company`s decision to bed with Rambus. He also chastised Rambus for its litigious fever. Given that Intel is Rambus`s most vital ally in its efforts to intrude its proprietary memory designs into the PC space, this is certainly a humiliating and debilitating slap in the face for the Mountain View company.

With its faltering stock price, eroding market share, repeated and embarrassing failures to execute with its CPUs and chipset products, the uncertainty around the P4`s abilities to counter AMD`s products and the publicly avowed fracturing of the key Rambus relationship speaks of the turmoil wrenching Intel. This commotion is leaking out.

While conflict was suggested by the recent reshuffling of personnel inside Intel`s Architecture Group, visceral indictments of the company have appeared in the media in the last week. These accounts pit factions that supported and drove through Rambus RDRAM against those, perhaps more qualified, who saw the problems that Tom`s Hardware Guide testing and reporting substantiated early this year. Finger pointing, bitterness and unrest appear to be acute at Intel, at least in some circles, according to this report, and this has been substantiated by information that has been sent to us from Intel insiders.

Casting a pall over the possibility of a successful Pentium 4 launch, Dr. Barrett mentioned in his interview with the Financial Times that Intel should not have committed itself to Rambus technology, a technology that he claims "gates" performance.

Once an icon of innovation, despite its great size advantage, Intel has fallen behind AMD in patent filings. While Intel`s innovative activity diminishes, AMD`s has exploded catapulting the company into one of the leading inventive companies in the world.

While AMD gains OEM wins, Intel is losing ground with them. A large loss is Micron Electronics which
, while only recently adding AMD to their lineup, stated that the Boise computer company intends to forego producing Pentium 4 systems, choosing instead to deliver AMD Athlon DDR SDRAM based computers.
