Use more ethanol

We welcome the news that Ohio Gov. Bob Taft has signed a bill requiring the state to increase its use of corn-based ethanol in its vehicles and to buy fleets that can be converted from gasoline power to ethanol.

This is a small step in the right direction. Ethanol is only sold at six pumps in Ohio, and currently the demand far exceeds the supply. This action is little more than symbolic at the moment.

Still, it’s obvious that our state – and our nation – must begin taking action, however small, to end its over-reliance on imported oil. All we have to do is look at the volatility of prices at the gas pumps. North Korea fires a few missiles into the Sea of Japan, and suddenly, gasoline briefly hits $3.05 a gallon in the Tuscarawas Valley.

We need a dependable supply of energy for this country, one that would protect us from price fluctuations brought on by production problems in oil-producing countries or tensions in far corners of the globe.

What better source than Ohio’s vast cornfields? The state produces 500 million bushels of corn each year, and, according to Dwayne Siekman, executive director of the Ohio Corn Growers Assn., there is enough corn available to handle the 33 plants under construction across the country.

The state’s increased consumption of ethanol is also good in light of plans to build ethanol plants at Cadiz and Coshocton. It will guarantee a ready market for the ethanol they produce, which means jobs and income for our region.

Our leaders in Columbus don’t always do things worth applauding. But this is one time they got it right.
