The legs finally fell off the chair at Furniture.com.

The beleagured online furniture peddler shut its doors today because it could not obtain enough cash to continue operations.

The company fired 76 of its 88 employees. The remaining crew will work to close down the online retailer, includng finding a buyer for its remaining assets.

Furniture.com`s demise does not come as a surprise, since the company has been in difficult financial straits for months. In June, the company received $27 million from investors, including CMGI (CMGI), that barely stopped it from filing bankruptcy. At that time, the company laid off 41 percent of its staff.

Furniture.com joins fellow online furniture retailer Living.com on the dotcom trash heap.
