Digital Subscriber Line Service Activation Made Easy: 3Com Carrier Networks Business Speeds Provisioning of DSL Voice and Data Services

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 27, 2000--

Solution Integrates CommWorks(R) 5020 Intelligent Activation System and Total Control(R) 500 DSL Access Concentrators; Minimizes Service Activation Costs and Reduces the Need for Expensive "Truck Rolls"

3Com Corporation`s (Nasdaq:COMS) Carrier Networks Business, an industry leader in supplying access infrastructures and Internet protocol (IP) solutions to service providers around the globe, today announced the availability of a new solution for the rapid and accurate provisioning of voice and data services over digital subscriber lines (DSL). This accelerated DSL service activation solution combines the CommWorks(R) 5020 Intelligent Activation System and the Total Control(R) 500 DSL access concentrators product family and enables service providers to turn up service to new subscribers quickly, easily and accurately, and at a significantly lower cost, from a central location.

"DSL providers can activate both data and voice elements simultaneously, and in a fraction of the time it now takes to roll out new services," said Glen Hellman, vice president, 3Com Carrier Networks Business OSS unit. "The typical waiting period for DSL activation is 15-45 days. With this integrated solution, the service provider can scale its provisioning, saving the work of three or more people and several days in the provisioning process. Faster service activation means higher customer satisfaction and retention. It also means the broadband provider can reap more revenue more quickly."

The CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System works through Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and Extensible Markup Language (XML) to integrate with the service provider`s order entry and management system. The CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System server uses order information received in XML documents from the broadband provider`s service-order system to configure Symmetric DSL (SDSL), Integrated Services Digital Network DSL (IDSL), G.lite or Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) line cards in the Total Control 500 DSL access concentrator. The server pre-qualifies the order through a rules-based engine, then sends a CORBA activation command to the Total Control 500 DSL access concentrator. Confirmation of activation is then sent back to the CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System server, which then confirms to the order-entry system that service has been activated.

"Broadband providers can deliver flow-through, zero-touch service activation," Hellman said. "This significantly accelerates the delivery of next-generation data and voice services over IP-based and circuit-switched networks."

System Features High-performance Rules-based Engine

The CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System is a next-generation software platform that provides critical operation support system (OSS) services for automated activation, provisioning and validation of next-generation services. It gives service providers an intelligent flow-through activation, validation and notification solution for provisioning of data, voice, circuit-switched and broadband services. TheCommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System features a high performance and flexible rules-based engine to support the accurate modeling of operator networks.

The CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System uses a "smart objects" approach, which allows enhancements to legacy systems. Each application -- Activate, Verify, VerifyRX and Notification -- is considered a smart object because of the rules-based approach. The system provides all of these features in a single solution.

The CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System provides fundamental management and provisioning capabilities that are critical to moving carrier legacy networks to next-generation IP-based networks. The system allows service providers to customize and automate the provisioning and internal management of the services they deploy to customers. Operators can add new subscribers quickly and accurately, reducing customer turnover (or "churn") and cost of ownership for large carriers evolving their networks to IP services.

The CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System eliminates manual processing and decreases order entry errors that result from human intervention, using a rules-based engine that makes it impossible to enter customer order data incorrectly. Studies have show that for large networks only 28 percent of manual user activations were successful. By contrast, the CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System is capable of delivering success rates of 90 percent or better of complex network provisioning.

Network and Service Management in the CommWorks Architecture

The CommWorks 5020 Intelligent Activation System and other CommWorks 5000-level network and service management products reside in the control and network and service management layer (tier 2) of the three-tier CommWorks architecture. This highlights the critical role performed by the system in mediating between service management, provisioning and assurance operations and the underlying network elements over which services are provided.

The CommWorks architecture is 3Com Carrier Networks Business` versatile solution for multiservice packet-based networking. The architecture allows service providers to deliver narrowband enhanced data services, IP telephony, wireless data, and broadband access over a single converged network. The architecture consists of:

-- the Media Processing tier for universal connectivity through a
variety of network access options;
-- the Control and Network and Service Management tier for
universal signaling and control via protocol mediation, as
well as powerful network management, element management and
load-balancing services; and
-- the Service Creation tier, which provides an open service
creation environment that leverages open interfaces and 3Com
strategic partners to enable rapid application and service
deployment.
