Aveo desktop support to be shipped with US Robotics modems

NEW YORK, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Privately held Aveo Inc. said on Tuesday it will start shipping its Attune desktop support service on all new consumer modems from top modem maker U.S. Robotics, marking the first time the service will be included with modems.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. U.S. Robotics is part of computer networking equipment maker 3Com Corp. <COMS.O>.

Starting this month, all new U.S. Robotics modems will include Attune, Santa Clara, Calif.-based Aveo said. By the end of 2000, existing U.S. Robotics modem owners will also be able to install Attune for free.

With Attune, modem users can get technical help on their computers without having to call U.S. Robotics` help line. U.S. Robotics will be able to send messages to customers to help them upgrade products, download fixes, and perform other computing functions, Aveo said.

Aveo said U.S. Robotics also plans to distribute Attune to its 7 million to 12 million projected install base in 2001.

The Attune service is already included with Hewlett-Packard Co. <HWP.N> printers and Dell Computer Corp. <DELL.O> computers, an Aveo spokesman said.
