Interphase Brings Intelligent Processing to Third Generation Wireless
First of its Kind Controller Provides More Power and Capability for Telecommunication Networks
DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 18, 2000--Interphase Corporation (Nasdaq:INPH - news), a leader in next generation telecommunications technologies, announced today the release of the first intelligent asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) controller for third generation wireless -- the 4532 ATM OC-3/STM-1 PMC controller.

The 4532 communications controller is the newest innovation that allows carriers of wireless services and existing optical infrastructures to provide faster networking systems with higher capacity and efficiency for advanced voice, video and data convergence. The 4532 is a versatile PCI mezzanine card flexible enough to work with CompactPCI, VME or proprietary systems, and allows these systems to have direct connectivity to the high-speed digital, fiber optic transmission system known as Synchronous Optical NETwork (SONET).

``This is the first commercial, off-the-shelf, carrier class SONET interface,`` said Felix Diaz, chief technical officer at Interphase. ``The 4532 was specifically designed for third generation wireless and broadband Internet access applications, and combines ATM and internet protocol (IP) interfaces that bridge voice and IP data. We are the only provider able to make these claims.``

Third generation broadband wireless architectures are driven by a number of dynamics including an increase in consumer demand for faster and more flexible access technologies and the demand for Internet capabilities through wireless devices like mobile phones.

``Communication service providers are increasingly recognizing standards-based technologies such as CompactPCI and PMC to significantly reduce their product development timeframes,`` said Paul Zorfass, senior analyst with IDC/FTI. ``The telecommunications industry`s ongoing efforts to bring wireless and Internet switching capabilities to server-based systems are driving forces for the progressively larger market for embedded I/O products, such as the 4532.``

A major initiative of communication service providers has been the development of third generation architectures and their byproduct, wireless broadband. The developments give providers the ability to bypass the building of extensive landline fiber or cable, saving both time and money. Additionally, with the integration of Interphase`s new controllers into the optical mobile switch, designers can count on their intelligent processing capabilities while allowing access to more users on one platform.

``As a market driven company, we are always looking for the opportunity to be innovative while delivering the highest levels of quality and excellence,`` said Greg Kalush, president of Interphase. ``We believe there are tremendous opportunities for development with third generation wireless and broadband Internet access. With the first-of-its-kind 4532, we have again proven our ability to read market needs and respond with timely and reliable solutions.``

Currently, prototypes of the 4532 ATM controller are being tested and qualified by a number of telecom equipment manufacturers.
