14.6.2000 GMi DIGITAL AND YES TELEVISION AGREE TO CO-OPERATE TO DELIVER INTERACTIVE TELEVISION SERVICES IN ICELAND Iceland`s GMi Digital and the British company Yes Television have agreed to co-operate in order to deliver interactive television services in Iceland. The two companies intend to establish a new company, which will build and operate interactive television services to all homes in Iceland. Yes Television will supply technical expertise alongside Icelandic engineers, computer scientists and technicians to provide applications for video on demand (VOD), broadcast television, Internet access and e-mail to the television set. The companies intend to use the existing telecommunication infrastructure that is available in Iceland such as ADSL and fiber optic cables to deliver services to the homes. Thomas Kressner, Chairman and Chief Executive of Yes Television, commented: "The opportunities in Iceland for our Total Television product are very attractive since Icelanders are keen on new technology and home entertainment. Bandwidth to Icelandic homes is also in plentiful supply, making it possible for us to deliver high quality on demand services to the customer." Sveinbjorn Imsland, Chairman and technical director at GMi, commented: "After careful consideration we decided to co-operate with Yes Television to deliver interactive television services in Iceland. The reason is that Yes Television is a leading company in the development of VOD and other interactive services and has gained valuable experience from other projects they have participated in. The co-operation with Yes Television will strengthen the development of interactive television services in Iceland." |
