ROME, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Italian government should maintain a "significant" stake in the country's national airline Alitalia even after its privatization, said Italian Transport Minister Alessandro Bianchi, local media reported on Tuesday.

The minister made the suggestion after the close of an initial tender for Alitalia's 30.1-percent stake.

The government must keep a stake of at least 5 percent "to allow us to have our say, if anyone wants to listen," said Bianchi.

The government currently holds 49.9 percent of the carrier's shares and intends to sell at least 30.1 percent. Eleven private investors on Monday submitted letters of interest about possible acquisition of this struggling Italian airline, which has lost money for the past five years with a net debt of about 1.33 billion U.S. dollars.

The government is expected to examine the expression of interest "for the purpose of admission to the next phase," said a statement of the Italian Economy Ministry.

The whole privatization process is expected to last about six months.
