3Com Surpasses One Million Cable Modem Mark; Shipment of 1.2 Million Cable Modems Foreshadows Future Digital Home Market Growth

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 15, 2001--3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced has it shipped more than 1.2 million two-way external DOCSIS-compliant cable modems to cable companies and broadband Internet Service Providers around the world. 3Com`s largest United States-based customers include AT&T Broadband, Time Warner, Cablevision Systems and Charter; internationally, the company supplies cable modems to NTL Communications, TV Cabo, TVA Brazil and others.

"3Com has matched the needs of broadband Internet service providers as their subscriber bases surged during the past two years," said Michael Pula, director of cable product management for 3Com`s Residential Connectivity Group. "We are now poised to expand this effort in the coming year."

In addition to increased factory capacity and output capabilities, 3Com has instituted two initiatives that position it well to maintain its growth in this sector. First, the company resolved supply chain issues that plagued the entire industry, making strategic design decisions and sourcing from multiple suppliers. Second, 3Com worked with major service providers to offer consumers radically simple self-installation options, freeing service providers to more efficiently institute service.

Cable Internet Access Poised for Explosive Growth

"The migration from dial-up to broadband Internet connections will accelerate over the next several years and more than 16 million cable modem subscribers in North America alone are forecasted by 2004," said Patti A. Reali, senior analyst with Gartner Dataquest, the San Jose, Calif.-based market research and consulting firm. "New high-speed cable Internet subscribers will be driven not only by the desire for a better overall Internet experience, but also by the explosion in applications such as streaming audio and video, digital photography, gaming and other high-bandwidth content. As broadband services become more ubiquitous, suppliers such as 3Com, with strong channel management experience, are poised to capture an increasing share of these new broadband customers."

Delivering Quality to Broadband Industry Leaders

"Time Warner-Minneapolis and RoadRunner rely solely on 3Com cable modems for our residential customers," said Michael Fox, vice president and general manager of RoadRunner for Time Warner Cable Minnesota. "The company`s products and extraordinary responsiveness enable our customers to enjoy cable Internet experiences they crave with less waiting time."
