Soros Watch

George Soros, the 27th richest American according to Forbes, is one of the most successful hedge fund investors ever. In his latest filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, disclosed just last week, he unveiled several new holdings and changes to his portfolio. For the full update, check out the George Soros portfolio on Stockpicker.

Given his progressive politics, it makes sense that Soros has been betting on alternative sources of energy. In particular, he has decided to invest in corn and trees. One of his newer investments is Archer Daniels Midland (ADM - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr - Rating), which has a P/E of 15, a PEG of 1.7 and a yield of 1.3%.

Soros' tree investment is Weyerhaeuser (WY - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr - Rating), which also happens to be owned by SAC Capital Partners, a fund that has returned a purported 40% per year.

Here's my approach: Study the new holdings of the super investors, try to buy on dips -- that is, at lower prices than the investors -- and also try to anticipate what the investors might be doing.

In a recent video that Jim Cramer and I made for TheStreet.com TV, we discussed what Buffett's next rail plays might be. Jim was right and I was wrong; however, my play did end up in Carl Icahn's portfolio. These guys swarm in packs, and it can't hurt to study their styles.
