Scientific-Atlanta Unveils Explorer 4000DVB Set-Top; Built to Meet Demand for Triple Play Services for DVB and PAL Cable Systems
ATLANTA, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta today unveiled its new Explorer(R) 4000DVB digital set-top, designed to offer the triple play of video, data, and voice services in a single device for Europe and other markets using the PAL video standard. The latest model, scheduled for availability this Fall, is designed to support worldwide standards such as DVB-C, PAL, DAVIC/DVB-RC, DOCSIS, and EuroDOCSIS and provides the operator with a choice of middleware and conditional access options for maximum flexibility. The Explorer 4000DVB will leverage the experience and interactive success of the Explorer set-top platform that is enjoying widespread acceptance with nearly 5.0 million units already shipped.

"With the consumer demand for digital interactive television now, we are leveraging our integration expertise to offer an end-to-end system solution or stand-alone digital interactive set-top for DVB and PAL markets."
With its combination of powerful internal processing power, added memory, and stable operating system, the Explorer 4000DVB set-top will be capable of delivering digital broadcast video and real-time, two-way interactive applications -- such as web browsing, e-mail, e-commerce, and video-on-demand -- to the television. Plus, with its integrated cable modem it will be a home gateway that can simultaneously provide high-speed Internet access to a home computer, Voice-over-IP, and home networking services.
The Explorer 4000DVB model will feature a powerful blend of RISC-based processor and hardware-assisted circuitry for enhanced applications, networking, and graphics and video processing. This unique architecture will be implemented with the following:
* 20 MB total standard memory with optional expansion to 84MB of total
memory
* dual 64/256 QAM tuners
* integrated DOCSIS/ EuroDOCSIS cable modem
* optional DAVIC/DVB-RC cable modem
* PAL output with SCART connectors including USB, Ethernet, and dual
Smart Card interfaces; and
* choice of PowerKEY conditional access (CA) system or use other CA
systems to protect programming.
The Explorer 4000DVB will use the efficient PowerTV operating system which provides cable operators with an open platform for software development and applications. Over 70 developers around the world are developing applications to run on the PowerTV operating system. The Explorer 4000DVB platform will also support a variety of middleware choices from leading vendors and emerging standards.
In addition to the Explorer family, Scientific-Atlanta can provide cable operators with the headend hardware, software, and system integration support they need to deploy digital interactive networks. Scientific-Atlanta has helped operators install over 200 digital systems, passing 35 million homes, with interactive applications available to over seven million potential subscribers.
