CommWorks Corporation Purchases Multiple SledgeHammer(TM) Test Systems from Empirix

WILMINGTON, Mass., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Communications Infrastructure Test Group of Empirix (formerly Hammer Technologies) announced today that CommWorks Corporation, a 3Com Company (Nasdaq: COMS), has purchased multiple SledgeHammer Test Systems for testing carrier-class, high-density multiservice access equipment. Initial system deliveries were taken in Q4 2000 with further purchases planned in 2001.

Robin Nastos, R&D Director of Systems Test at CommWorks Corporation said, "The SledgeHammer test system, with its dual DS3 interface, broad feature set, and ease of use, gives us the best solution for testing our communications devices. We are most impressed with the SledgeHammer`s high SS7 call rates and VoIP testing capabilities. It provides us a cost effective test platform that emulates real world operating conditions in the lab."

CommWorks Corporation is comprised of the entirety of 3Com`s former Carrier Networks Business and its rich legacy of delivering customer centric, IP-based networking solutions to service providers on a global basis. These networks allow service providers to deliver enhanced data and voice services to their end users through dial, wireless and broadband access.

"CommWorks is a leader in next-generation carrier-class access platforms with the highest standards for quality and aggressive time-to-market goals. We are pleased that CommWorks chose the SledgeHammer as their telecommunications testing solution," said Mark MacLean, Empirix Performance Test Product Manager. "This is further reinforcement that our efforts in developing high capacity test solutions that emulate real world operational environments is in line with our customers` needs."

The SledgeHammer Test System, with an optional dual DS3 interface, delivers up to 1,344 channels of traffic for testing high-density next- generation telecommunications systems. The SledgeHammer is available with a unique software option that allows users to switch between DS3 and E1 interfaces on 56 span systems or T1 and E1 interfaces on 28 span systems. This option maximizes test equipment investments while minimizing lab space requirements.

All channels are controlled from a single user interface and can be configured to deliver voice, fax, or tones with CAS, ISDN, NFAS or SS7 signaling. The SledgeHammer can deliver this traffic in accordance with a number of packaged call profiles that emulate real world traffic conditions. Now available with the Hammer VoIP test application, the SledgeHammer provides voice quality testing on all telephony channels. The SledgeHammer enables equipment manufacturers and service providers to test high-density telecommunications systems performance under real world operating conditions.
