Telewest mixes Scientific-Atlanta with Pace for STBs

Telewest has signed up Scientific-Atlanta as an additional supplier of digital set-top boxes (STBs), with rollout due to begin by the end of this calendar year and expected to continue for around two years.
The broadband services supplier, which has cable services running to around 1.7m UK households, previously relied on UK-based Pace Micro alone for its STBs.
Telewest is committed to rolling out half a million STBs in the UK by the end of Q1 2001, a timetable that threatened to come off the rails when Pace Micro ran into problems sourcing flash memory chips: “There was a short period last summer when chips were difficult to get hold of, but it wasn’t just a set-top box problem – it affected mobile phones as well,” said a Pace Micro spokesperson.
A Telewest spokesperson denied that the deal signalled the end of the relationship with Pace Micro: “Pace Micro are supplying us according to our original agreement. It’s always helpful to have an alternative supplier and it’s not unusual,” she said.
According to analyst Tim Grimsditch of Forrester Research, US-based Scientific-Atlanta is a natural choice for Telewest: “Scientific-Atlanta is a serious player –in Europe there is really only Pace Micro, Motorola, Scientific-Atlanta and maybe Philips
,” he said. Telewest declined to reveal how many STBs it has deployed to date.

i.Ü. werden die Cabelcos Monopole a la Microsoft oder Monokulturen a la d-boxen zu verhindern wissen und sich auf mehrere Zuliefer-Standbeine stellen.
