Running hot

With uranium explorers a dime a dozen these days, it's getting harder for punters to pick out the few available gems.

But Deutsche Bank and Fat Prophets both agree Marathon Resources has the right stuff.

Marathon owns the Mt Gee deposit in South Australia, the one state where you can actually mine uranium.

It has an inferred resource of 31,200 tonnes, making it one of the largest unmined deposits in Australia.

Marathon is also a proven takeover target, although Hong Kong investment bank Crosby Capital Partners' $3.52 a share offer which is set to close next month is well below the uranium company's current share price. Marathon shares closed 15c higher at $6.15 yesterday.

Some strong resource drilling results this week were enough to make Deutsche analyst Brendan James confident Mt Gee was one of Australia's "premium uranium resources" and to rate the company a "buy".

Fat Prophets analyst Gavin Wendt agreed Marathon was one of the best investments in the ultra-hot sector.

"Unlike most of its junior rivals … Marathon has a high quality asset base and technical team," he said. "It is one of a handful of uranium companies that we currently follow and that can transform their potential into reality."

Wendt also warned his clients about the pitfalls of investing in fly-by-night uranium upstarts given the uranium bubble would ultimately burst.

"Certainly, the 'greater fool' theory is at work in the current climate," he said.

"That is, many investors know that their stocks are overvalued and overhyped when they buy them, but are happy to do so in the knowledge that they should be able to on-sell them to someone even more gullible at a higher price."
