Applied Digital Solutions` Signature Industries Subsidiary to Provide Deep-Water Recovery Beacons to Royal NavyFrench Special Forces and UK Ministry of Defense place trial order for world`s first military search and combat rescue beacon to incorpora

PALM BEACH, Fla., Jan 31, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Applied Digital Solutions,
Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSX) announced today that its U.K. based Signature Industries
Limited has been awarded a contract to supply the Royal Navy with its SARBE 10,
a leading edge deep-water recovery beacon.

The emergency rescue beacons will be used in the recovery of submarine
personnel. Signature has worked in partnership with Beaufort, the world leader
in supply of MK10 Submarine survival suits, to develop a rescue system.
Signature has designed the beacon to survive to a depth of 350 meters. Delivery
of the units will be in July 2001 with technical support extending for a period
of up to ten years.

Signature has also recently received a trial order from French Special Forces
and from the UK Ministry of Defense for their recently launched SARBE 8 combat
rescue beacon, the first military search and rescue device to incorporate GPS
technology.

Mercedes Walton, President and COO for Applied Digital Solutions, commented:
"The tragedy with the Russian submarine Kursk shows us that even in times of
relative peace, the need for members of the armed forces to have a reliable
means of signaling location in times of distress is imperative. We see a great
opportunity to leverage our existing partnerships for the armed forces and
government agencies of other countries, including the U.S. These sorts of
contracts could, in the future, lay the groundwork for deployment of Digital
Angel technology to these same markets."

Ms. Walton concluded: "Applied Digital Solutions commitment to providing
comprehensive communications solutions on a global level is epitomized in this
critical area of military and intelligence safety."

About SARBE 10 and SARBE 8

The SARBE 10 SPLB is a new survival radio designed specifically for use by
submarine crews. The beacon is designed for immediate activation prior to
commencement of the escape procedure to ensure that the SPLB is transmitting on
reaching the surface.

SARBE 8 is the first military search and rescue device to incorporate GPS,
allowing pin-point accuracy of the location of a downed pilot or combat team.
Applied Digital Solutions provides the total solution for the recovery through
"Sarfind", the recovery decoder. Sarfind is carried onto the search vehicle and
displays the GPS coordinates, facilitating accurate and speedy recovery of the
personnel. SARBE 8 also has a speech facility, and can be programmed with up to
200 frequencies. The GPS coordinates are protected from enemy intelligence by
programming the Sarfind to the SARBE 8 prior to operation commencement.

More About Digital Angel

In December of 1999, Applied Digital Solutions announced that it had acquired
the patent rights to a miniature digital transceiver -- which it has named
Digital Angel. Digital Angel represents the first-ever operational combination
of advanced sensor technology and Web-enabled wireless telecommunications linked
to GPS systems. The company believes this technology will enable it to tap into
a multi-billion dollar marketplace with a number of applications that will prove
to be extremely popular. Potential applications include: medical and location
monitoring for at-risk patients; emergency location of lost or missing children;
finding lost or missing household pets; managing livestock and other
farm-related animals; pinpointing the location of valuable stolen property; and
managing the commodity supply chain. Digital Angel data is transmitted
wirelessly, on a real time basis, to an Internet-integrated ground station and
made available on a Web-enabled desktop, laptop or wireless device. The new
Technology Park facilities will be the primary application center for the entire
Digital Angel Delivery System. A new Digital Angel wristwatch device will be
unveiled at Cyberposium at Harvard University on February 10, 2001. For more
