Telewest ups competition

Telewest, the UK cable operator, is to throw down the gauntlet to
British Telecommunications by offering unmetered voice calls for a flat
rate.

The package is believed to be the most radical of its kind and
represents an escalation in competition in the fixed-line telephony
market.

Subscribers will be able to make as many local and national voice calls
as they wish, at any time of the day, for £25 a month. Analysts said
the deal was an attempt by Telewest to attract heavy residential
telephone users away from BT.

Philip Jansen, managing director of Telewest`s cable division, said the offer would make people
more comfortable about using the telephone.

"Our research shows that 94 per cent of people are worried about their phone bill because it`s
difficult to gauge how much you`re spending on a daily basis. This deal will remove that fear," he
said.

Telewest`s step mirrors similar moves in the internet market, where service providers have
introduced unmetered tariffs. However, some of the packages have proved uneconomic.

Mr Jansen said he was confident that Telewest`s voice offer would prove cost-effective.

Line rental and a basic package of digital television channels will be included in the deal. Extra
charges will be made for international calls and mobile numbers.

For an additional £25 a month, subscribers can receive Telewest`s Blueyonder broadband service,
which delivers high-speed internet access.

"For £1.60 a day, subscribers are getting unmetered telephony, digital television and high-speed
internet. This underlines the appeal of cable, which allows all these services to be bundled
together," said Mr Jansen.

Steve Malcolm, analyst at Deutsche Bank, said the package was designed to recruit more
high-spending customers to Telewest. "Cable companies have traditionally attracted the less
lucrative demographic groups. Internet services and unmetred telephony is aimed at improving
Telewest`s share of upmarket customers," he said.
