Aug 28 (Reuters) - Sinofert (0297.HK: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), China's largest distributor of imported fertilisers, expects to complete talks with foreign potash suppliers by yearend, setting the level and price of 2009 imports, its top executive said.
China faces an estimated shortfall of up to a quarter of its demand of 11-12 million tonnes of potash this year, and Sinofert hopes to seal 2009 import agreements as early as possible to ensure supply and forestall a potential rise in import prices.
Sinofert plans to talk independently to foreign potash suppliers this year on import contracts, and the negotiations are expected to be completed by the end of 2008, Chief Executive Officer Du Keping told Reuters on Thursday.
Analysts expect Beijing to raise tariffs to as much as 185 percent, after current tariffs expire at the end of September.
Du would only say that China may lift urea export tariffs again from current levels, in an effort to keep more of the crucial chemical at home and curb agricultural inflation.
"If the international urea prices keep growing and the increase of China's export volume affects domestic supply, the government could raise the export tariff again," he said.
China, the world's largest fertilizer market, in April slapped 135-percent export tariffs on urea exports to control rapidly rising domestic agricultural costs that have stoked inflation, further tightening the global market.
Booming demand for grain across the globe, driven by the growing needs of developing economies and mandates for the increasing use of biofuels in the United States and Europe, have pushed prices of crops and allied products sharply higher.
