GM Daewoo 'pleased' with LG Chem battery tech-CEO

SEOUL, Sept 4 (Reuters) - GM Daewoo Auto&echnology Co, the South Korean unit of General Motors Corp, (News/Aktienkurs) said Thursday it was 'very pleased' with battery technology from LG Chem (News) <051910.KS>, a bidder to supply batteries to GM's Chevy Volt electric car.

'We are working with LG Chem on batteries and we are very pleased with the progress LG Chem is making,' Michael A. Grimaldi, GM Daewoo's president and chief executive officer, told a launch event for the Veritas sedan.

General Motors <GM.N> said last month it would finalize the design of the all-electric Chevy Volt by mid-September and aims to complete 50 prototypes with production-ready parts by the end of 2008.

GM has been racing to finish development of the Volt in time for its planned launch in 2010. The Volt is the centrepiece of GM's effort to move away from large SUVs, as truck sales tumble and gasoline prices remain high.

GM has not made a formal announcement on a battery supplier for the Volt, a plug-in model that the company is designing to run for 40 miles (64 kilometers) on a lithum-ion battery pack.

The Volt marks one of the first attempts to adapt lithium-ion batteries, widely used in consumer electronics, for cars.

LG Chem is battling to supply batteries to the Volt with other makers such as German auto parts supplier Continental AG <CONG.DE>.

In June, an LG Chem unit said it was ready to supply next-generation batteries to the Volt.

Shares in LG Chem closed 4.97 percent lower at 89,900 won on Thursday, underperforming a flat wider market <.KS11>.

Meanwhile, GM Daewoo plans to launch a hybrid model in South Korea over the next two years and is working with its parent on hybrid technologies, Grimaldi said.
