--------------------------------------------------------------------------------<p>Splendid Medien AG in the first quarter of 2001<p>- Sales of EUR3.7 million, EBIT of -EUR2.1 million
- Screen rights up 75% over last year
- On-target sales for the whole year 2001 unchanged at EUR51 million<p>In the first quarter of 2001 Splendid Medien AG recorded sales of
EUR3.7 million. The comparable figure last year was EUR6.7 million.<p>Sales in the Splendid Group suffered primarily from the postponed delivery of
the film "e;The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys"e;. This co-production, which was
originally scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2001, will only be
reflected in sales in the second half of the year. This means that the
international Licences Trading Segment generated sales of EUR0.3 million in the
first quarter of 2001. The national Licences Trading Segment (sales:
EUR0.4 million) was severely affected by restrained sales activity from
dealings in licences with German television companies. In the Cinema Film
Exploitation Segment sales to the sum of EUR0.9 million were recorded from the
cinema circuit starts of "e;Dr. T and the Women"e; and "e;Under Control"e; (Original
title "e;Gorgeous"e
. Cinema exploitation of "e;Traffic"e; will only be reflected insales and earnings in the second quarter of 2001. This thriller has been viewed
by 1.2 million cinema-goers since it started its run in Germany at the
beginning of April.<p>In the retail cassette/DVD sector, sales increased by 93% to EUR1.4 million.
Rental VHS and DVD generated sales of EUR0.1 million (EUR1.2 million last
year). For the second half of the year Splendid expects distinct increases in
turnover from video exploitation of the cinema productions. Post-production
(dubbing/DVD premastering) managed to increase its turnover in the first
quarter by 56% to EUR0.6 million.<p>Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA)
amounted to -EUR0.2 million (EUR5.1 million last year). Earnings before
interest and taxes (EBIT) were -EUR2.1 million (EUR0.8 last year). The EBIT
figure was particularly affected by amortisation undertaken on film rights and
the costs for cinema exploitation which provide the basis for turnover and
earnings in the follow-on exploitation stages. DVFA earnings per share amounted
to -EUR0.16 (EUR0.10 last year).<p>At the end of the quarter, screen rights amounted to EUR85.8 million and were
therefore 75% higher than the figure for the previous year.<p>Typical of our branch of industry is the fact that the main thrust of revenues
and earnings lies in the second half of the year. Splendid Medien AG expects
for that period distinct increases in turnover and earnings, in particular from
the delivery of the co-produced films including "e;Gangs of New York"e;, and is
sticking by its target sales figure of EUR51 million over the entire year 2001.<p>Contact:
