Tokyo Stocks Tumble On Late-Session Worries Over Mycal
TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Tokyo stocks sank late Tuesday as worries about a troubled retailer suddenly rekindled concerns about Japan`s bad debts and wrecked a day of solid gains.
The Nikkei lurched south in the afternoon on a plunge by retail giant Mycal over concerns about its financial health as the government steps up the pressure on banks to dispose of bad loans.

"If this Mycal case starts to prompt reorganization in the retail sector as a whole, we may see more retailers fail," Jujiya Securities Masayoshi Okamoto said.

Mycal said it was checking the source of the rumors and hadn`t received any requests for early loan repayment.

After being up more than 200 points in the morning, the Nikkei ended down 123.53 points, or 1.0%, at 12574.26, after a 0.7% decline Monday.

The Topix index of all the TSE First Section issues also shed early gains, ending down 5.46 points, or 0.4%, at 1,254.19.
