OpenTV and Pace Micro Technology Extend Global Agreement
OpenTV Technology Selected for High-End Broadband Cable Home Gateway
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. & WEST YORKSHIRE, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- June 28, 2001--Pace Micro Technology (PIC:L), the world`s largest dedicated developer of digital home gateway technology, and OpenTV (Nasdaq and AEX: OPTV), the world`s leading interactive television and media solutions company, have signed an agreement to jointly develop high-end digital cable technology worldwide.
Pace will port OpenTV`s industry leading broadband offering onto its advanced Di4000 cable home gateway, which is fast becoming the de facto digital cable platform in Western Europe. OpenTV`s broadband portfolio includes its interactive TV Middleware, EN2, integrated with Device Mosaic(TM), a standards-based HTML browser specifically developed for the TV market and already deployed in more than 7 million television receivers worldwide.
OpenTV`s EN2 Middleware enables full two-way connectivity between a network operator and the viewer`s set-top box. EN2 has already been selected by eight broadband cable TV networks worldwide. Device Mosaic(TM) enables Internet on TV and allows system operators and/or their developers to produce simple iTV applications in HTML that can be delivered either over the open Internet or in an Intranet-based Walled Garden.
The Pace Di4000 offers cable operators the ability to provide many advanced interactive TV services, including video on demand, high-speed Internet service, and Voice over IP (VoIP). The Di4000 represents the latest broadband generation of Pace`s successful Di1000/2000 product series, as deployed in the UK by NTL and Telewest.
``Pace is leveraging its proven OpenTV expertise by porting OpenTV`s broadband technology onto Pace`s Di4000 -- the world-leading cable home gateway. By selecting Pace, OpenTV has again allied itself with the industry leader and shown that its technology is suitable for both satellite and cable broadband networks,`` said Neil Gaydon, Pace Micro Technology director of sales.
Pace and OpenTV have worked together since 1996, creating home gateway solutions for network operators and broadcasters worldwide. OpenTV also utilizes Pace home gateway technology for its OpenTV Target Decoder, the programming reference for OpenTV developers worldwide.
James Ackerman, OpenTV`s CEO, said, ``We have a long-term relationship with Pace. This new partnership will see us work together to develop new high-end digital cable television products. OpenTV middleware is already being used in 16 million set-top boxes worldwide. This new broadband platform allows us to integrate our market-leading HTML technology, which has already been deployed on 7 million set tops as a standalone browser. The combined offering is expected to be the most advanced broadband set top solution we`ve offered to the market. We look forward to extending our leadership position by making advanced interactive TV services a reality on any network.``
The Di4000 will support both NTSC and PAL broadcast standards, has a 175 MIPS processor, an integrated DOCSIS cable modem, USB and Ethernet connectivity and will offer a pioneering interactive remote control support.
