OTI outside... http://www.chinaonline.com/industry/financial/NewsArchive/Se… Gemplus To Provide Smartcards To China (10/20/1998) Gemplus, the world’s largest producer of smartcards, recently signed an agreement with the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) to introduce advanced software and hardware that will support the use of the cards, according to the October 16 Zhongguo Dianzi Bao (China Electronics News). Smartcards, which are called integrated circuit (IC) cards in China, are familiar in Europe, the United States, and elsewhere, where they are used, for example, in payphones, cellular phones, identity cards and debit cards. Gemplus will license smartcard software and hardware to the PBOC’s Bank Certification Center. Among other things, the company will ensure that smartcards and terminals from different vendors can operate together. Gemplus has been working actively with PBOC for the past few years to develop IC card specifications. It recently released a series of products designed to provide banks with a secure, cost-efficient nationwide payment system—which is highly desired by the country’s financial sector as well as consumers. |
