Efforts are being made to perfect the ultra-fast advanced fourth generation (4G) telecommunication technology on the platform of long-term evolution or LTE. The latest technology enables users to watch 3D TV without interruption while on the move.

There was a glimpse of such an effort when the state-run Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) demonstrated the so-called LTE-advanced system, Tuesday, for the first time in the world.

The demonstration involved the seamless streaming of video in a moving vehicle. The technology involved is an advanced version of LTE technology to be commercialized by the second half of this year by SK Telecom.

The institute has committed 470 researchers and invested 64.4 billion won during the past five years to develop the new technology.

The institute expected businesses to take 40 percent of the global terminal market from 2015 to 2021, making 346 trillion won in sales. Korean players are also likely to take 15 percent of the station and network device market, making 16.7 trillion won.

The institute has applied for around 500 patents during the development, and received 24 essential core patents.

The researchers are currently working on the commercialization of the service, which is likely to be made available in 2014.

To this end the system should be optimized with one chip, and a compatibility test should be undertaken between the terminal and the station.

The institute said the achievement would help the country to get ahead of competitors in Beyond 4G development.

“I hope that the achievement of ETRI will be transferred to small- and medium-sized businesses that develop related devices, which would lead to shared growth and job creation,” said Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik.

The new 4G technology can reach a data transmitting speed of 600Mbps. It is 40 times faster than the currently used high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA), and six times faster than the LTE service that will launch here commercially from July.

The downlink speed in mobility marked 120 Mbps, which means a high speed Internet service without cutoff will be available anywhere.

It also supports interlocking with other mobile technologies such as a global system for mobile communication (GSM), wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) and HSDPA.
