PNG MINEFIELD

Papua New Guinea's former deputy prime minister Chris Haiveta is teaming up with Clive Palmer's best buddy, Domenic Martino, and resource industry legend Yosse Goldberg to look for oil and gas in the country.

Those with long memories will recall that in the mid-1990s Haiveta was deputy to Sir Julius Chan when the Sandline scandal, a proposal to use mercenaries to regain control of Bougainville from rebels, became public and eventually caused the government to fall.

The trio are backing their search for petroleum products, primarily gas, in permit areas near existing PNG pipelines, into the shell of Orchid Capital - which has spent the last couple of years waiting for a reason to exist. Haiveta ought to know where the resources are buried, given that among his many portfolios in three decades in PNG government he was once mines, petroleum and energy minister.

If they get their way, Orchid will more than double its issued capital, issuing another 220 million shares to buy into PNG - of which 135 million go to Haiveta.

Orchid's 4.7ยข shares were suspended late last night, and are unlikely to resume trading until tomorrow.
