LG.Philips Retains Leadership in Global TFT-LCD Market By Kim Sung-jin Staff Reporter LG.Philips LCD, a joint venture firm between Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands and LG Electronics, retained its top post in supplying thin film transistor-liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) to the world for seven straight quarters, DisplaySearch announced yesterday. According to a second quarter global TFT-LCD shipment report disclosed by DisplaySearch, a flat panel display market research and consulting firm, LG.Philips LCD`s second quarter shipment volume went up by 20.4 percent from the previous quarter, a 40 percent hike compared with the corresponding period last year. This is the highest growth recorded by the world`s top 10 LCD makers, said the research firm. LG.Philips LCD also ranked second in 18-inch and bigger, large-size TFT- LCD production. Moreover, DisplaySearch explained that the world`s first quarter monitor application shipment volume hiked by 16 percent to 2,570,000 units compared with the first quarter, whereas LG.Philips LCD performed far better by posting 30 percent growth in the same period. Bolstered by its global 15-inch monitor market share skyrocket by 27 percent in the April-June period, the joint electronics firm extended its world LCD monitor market share to 17 percent from the 15.1 percent in the first quarter. DisplaySearch added that LG.Philips LCD kept the second place in notebook computer module production while its global market share rose by 13.4 percent. ``We are extremely excited to be ranked the fastest growing large-size TFT- LCD supplier this past quarter and look forward to additional opportunities in upcoming quarters,`` said Bruce Berkoff, marketing executive vice president of LG.Philips LCD.
