NEW YORK, Aug 23, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- United Industrial Corporation (UIC, Trade) today announced that its AAI Corporation subsidiary has been awarded a significant production contract by the U.S. Air Force for its Joint Service Electronic Combat Systems Tester (JSECST). The contract is valued at $26.3 million.

The JSECST system has been designated by the U.S. Defense Department as the standard flight line electronic warfare test system, supporting all branches of the U.S. military. The system will be used to quickly and accurately test electronic warfare and avionics systems in a wide range of aircraft, assuring flight crews that their aircraft are mission ready. The system will be used by the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Under the contract, AAI will provide 96 JSECST Core Test Set (CTS) systems, including Test Program Sets, training and spare parts. The Air Force is expected to order a significant quantity of additional JSECST systems in 2002 and 2003.

Richard R. Erkeneff, President and Chief Executive Officer of United Industrial, commented, "This award expands United Industrial`s role serving some of the nation`s most important defense programs and continues the substantial growth of our defense business. JSECST is the most advanced electronic warfare test technology ever developed and has outstanding potential as the first test set designed for compatibility with electronic combat and avionics systems in all branches of worldwide military forces. We expect it to be a mainstay product for years to come."

Engineering and manufacturing development of the JSECST was recently completed. United Industrial participated in this process through previous contracts, supporting the development of Test Program Sets used with the JSECST system to test electronic warfare equipment installed in F/A-18, F-15, F-16, AV-8B, A-10, and other tactical and strategic aircraft.
