Noch ein paar "gute nachrichten":

US consumers see unemployment rising to 6 pct in early 2002 - survey

WASHINGTON (AFX) - Consumers expect the US unemployment rate to rise to around 6 pct early next year from 4.9 pct in September, according to a University of Michigan survey.

A majority of 61 pct of respondents to the special survey of consumer attitudes after the Sept 11 terrorist attacks on the US expect the unemployment rate to rise in the year ahead.

The data "indicate that consumers now anticipate the unemployment rate to rise to about 6 pct by early 2002," said Richard Curtin, director of the survey, in a statement.

A comparably pessimistic outlook for unemployment has only been recorded in University of Michigan surveys during the recessions of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, according to the statement.

About 20 pct of respondents said their sense of safety was shaken "a good deal" by the attacks, while 29 pct reported it was shaken somewhat.

According to the survey, most consumers would save, not spend, further tax rebates currently being considered by Washington as part of a fiscal stimulus package.

"Only about 15 pct said they would spend the additional tax rebate," the survey results found, if presented with a 1,000 usd tax rebate this fall.

An 85 pct majority said they would use the money to pay down existing debt or to rebuild savings.
