Waterloo-based Solar Ubiquity Inc., a company specializing in the photovoltaic industry, has announced plans to set up an $11-million pilot manufacturing plant to be located in the Bluewater Energy Park in Sarnia’s Chemical Valley.
CEO Ian MacLellan outlined the Solar Ubiquity’s plans at a public meeting of the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) on Thursday.
Construction of the plant, which will manufacture silicon wafers for use in photovoltaic solar panel cells, is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2014, with construction of a full production facility to follow in 2016.

MacLellan cited Sarnia-Lambton’s knowledge of, and familiarity with, large-scale chemical manufacturing as one of Ubiquity’s deciding factors in its choice of Sarnia-Lambton for the pilot plant.
At the same meeting, George Mallay, SLEP’s general manager, outlined the organization’s work in positioning the area as a Biohybrid Chemistry Cluster, and endeavours in other sectors such as agriculture, information technology, and energy. Mallay also discussed the organization’s advocacy work, along with other community groups, regarding issues such as the now rescinded Sarnia Jail closure and the need for better rail service.
