Cubic Wins U.S. Air Force Contract For ``Rangeless`` Air Combat Training Systems; Two-Year Refurbishment Contract has Potential Value of $40 Million SAN DIEGO, Nov 8, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The U.S. Air Force has awarded Cubic Defense Systems Inc., a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX: CUB), a requirements-type contract valued at approximately $40 million to provide nine U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard facilities with an autonomous, "rangeless" Air Combat Training capability. Cubic, the prime contractor and systems integrator, is teamed with Metric Systems Corporation of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., a subsidiary of Integrated Defense Technologies Inc. (IDT). Under the contract, the USAF will receive Deployable Ground Stations for PC-based debriefing stations and refurbished airborne instrumentation "pods" that will incorporate Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. The Deployable Ground Stations will include Cubic`s new Individual Combat Aircrew Display System (ICADS(TM)), which allows pilots to debrief training missions on commercially available PCs or laptop computers in a user-friendly Windows environment. The instrumentation pods, typically mounted on a wingtip weapon station, are mobile monitoring devices that collect in-flight data for post-mission debriefs. As part of the contract, the pods will be upgraded to the "P4R1" rangeless configuration. The rangeless air combat training system will allow the rapid deployment of air combat training missions, in any available airspace, without reliance on fixed ground infrastructure. "This is a great opportunity to provide next-generation training capability to the combat Air Force pilots and significantly enhance readiness," said Don Jacobs, director of Cubic Defense Systems` Training Systems Programs. "The autonomous system is specifically designed with portable, configurable equipment that can easily be packed and loaded for shipment to any site." The new pods will support training for F-15 and F-16 aircraft based at nine locations throughout the United States. In addition to GPS technology, the pods will be configured with a tightly-coupled GPS receiver/Inertial Measurement Unit package to provide an extremely accurate tracking solution. The package also includes a removable digital recorder that allows aircrews to perform an after action review of the missions flown on the ICADS-based ground station. Cubic Defense Systems is part of the Cubic Defense Group, which produces instrumented air and ground combat training systems, battle command training, simulations and simulation support for U.S. and allied military forces. The group also produces high technology avionics, data links and communications products for government and commercial customers; and a wide range of technical and logistics services. The corporation`s other major segment, Cubic Transportation Systems, designs and manufactures automatic fare collection systems for public mass transit authorities worldwide. |
