Maryland Tickets Cubic for $38.3 Million Dec 21, 2001 (Internet.com via COMTEX) -- The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has awarded Cubic Transportation Systems , a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp. , a $38.3 million contract to deliver the nation`s first statewide smart ticketing system. The total value of the contract could reach $41 million if all options are exercised. The contract represents a final step in the MTA`s initiative to deliver seamless transit throughout the state and completes the regional expansion of Washington`s popular SmarTrip smart card system, in service since June 1999 for rail and parking payment. The new MTA ticketing system, using a single smart card, will join all subway, light rail and commuter rail systems. The ticketing system will also link the state`s commuters to the regional bus system that feeds into Washington, D.C. This year, Cubic received a series of contracts totaling approximately $59 million for more than 3,000 smart card-enabled fareboxes and electronic validators to be installed on buses throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland, and parts of Virginia. Nearly 210,000 Washington riders are using the SmarTrip system. Cubic`s fare collection system will use both magnetic and smart card products for the state`s subway, light rail, commuter rail and bus transit systems. Maryland commuters who work in Washington, for example, and have to change transit modes or operators will be able to pay using a single card. Cubic will integrate the MTA`s new rail equipment, including gates, handheld units and ticket vending machines with the Tri-Reader, Cubic`s core technology for supporting system compatibility among all the participating agencies. Tri-Reader is one of Cubic`s advanced smart card tools, developed to plug into new and existing mass transit systems. As part of the MTA contract, Cubic will deliver several value-added ticketing services, such as SmartBenefits, a SmarTrip application currently in use at Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), which allows participating federal and private sector employees to receive transit benefits directly on their SmarTrip cards at the WMATA vendors. All MTA end devices will both dispense benefits and allow Autoload, which lets transit users link their smart cards to their credit cards for automatic reload of transit value into the system, similar to the way "EZ-Pass" works for toll road users. In addition, users will be able to load value on their smart cards at ticket vending machines using either their credit or debit cards. The MTA equipment is scheduled for installation in stages between the second and fourth quarters of 2003, with complete system acceptance by the third quarter of 2004. The equipment will be manufactured at Cubic`s Tullahoma, Tenn. production facilities. |
