Cubic`s Smart Card-Ready Equipment Ordered for CTA`s Blue Line Rehabilitation Project

SAN DIEGO, Dec 27, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cubic Transportation Systems Inc., a
subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX: CUB), has been awarded a $3.3
million contract to provide smart card-ready fare collection equipment for the
Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)`s Blue Line Cermak (Douglas) Branch
rehabilitation project.

Cubic is the provider of the CTA`s existing high-tech electronic fare collection
system that operates on all CTA rail lines, including the Blue Line. Built
between 1895 and 1912, the Cermak Branch, also known as the Douglas Branch, is a
critical link in the CTA rail system, which serves about 10,000 passengers a day
at its 11 stations.

Eight of the 11 stations will be renovated by Kiewit-Delgado, AJV, as part of a
$482 million rehabilitation made possible through federal and Illinois state
funding. It is the largest capital improvement project in the CTA`s history.

The CTA introduced smart cards to its riders in August 2000 under a pilot
program. Next year, the agency is planning a major rollout following a recent
order that calls for Cubic to deliver 300,000 new cards. CTA uses Cubic`s GO
CARD(R), the same technology the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
uses for its SmarTrip(R) system, the nation`s first transit smart card program.
Smart cards allow customers to save time by storing value on a plastic chip card
that makes contact with a "card reader" without actually touching it.

Cubic`s fare collection system is interoperable across the CTA`s rail and bus
system and the Chicago area`s Pace suburban bus system, making it the nation`s
first multi-agency, multi-modal system for public transit.

The CTA is adding new entrances and exits as well as new ticketing equipment at
several of the renovated stations to improve the rail system`s operations.
Cubic`s equipment includes federally compliant wheelchair-accessible gates,
high-volume faregates, high barrier gates, and ticket vending machines, all of
which are designed to accept both the CTA`s SmartCard and magnetic-stripe
farecards. Also included in the order are station information controllers, the
same information center/passenger units that allow passengers to check the value
and expiration date of smart cards and magnetic stripe cards throughout the rest
of the CTA system.

"The Chicago Transit Authority is more than the nation`s second largest transit
system; it is one of the pioneers in American transportation history," said
Walter C. Zable, president and CEO, Cubic Transportation Systems. "It is our
honor to be involved in this modernization project and to receive this latest
contract, which ensures there will be continuity of ticketing service throughout
the CTA system."

The equipment is scheduled for installation in the third quarter of 2002 and
will be manufactured at Cubic`s Tullahoma, Tenn. production facilities.

Cubic Transportation Systems is the world`s largest supplier and system
integrator of integrated electronic ticketing systems and has smart card
contracts for public transit systems in North America, Europe and Asia.
Recently, the company added a security group to expand its smart card technology
into non-transit uses including security and access control. Working with Cubic
Security, the Washington Metro added a security application to its transit-based
SmarTrip(R) cards issued to employees who work in a secure area of the transit
authority. The application can potentially grow to include biometrics, such as
fingerprint and facial recognition.

Every year, nearly 10 billion people use Cubic systems in more than 40 major
markets in cities on five continents, including London, Washington, D.C., Hong
Kong, Chicago, New York, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Atlanta, San Francisco, Singapore
and Miami. As part of the TranSys consortium, Cubic also is supplying the entire
automated fare collection system including smart cards for the London PRESTIGE
project.

Cubic Transportation Systems Group is one of Cubic Corp.`s two major segments.
The Cubic Defense Group provides battle command training, instrumented training
systems, avionics, data links, product logistical support, and radio
communication systems. For more information about Cubic, see the company`s Web
