Big 3 Automakers to Combine Online Buying Ventures

WARREN, Mich. (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news), Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - news) and DaimlerChrysler AG (NYSE:DCX - news) (DCXGn.DE) said on Friday they plan to combine their online buying efforts for suppliers in a single Internet portal.

The new supplier network will be open to all auto manufacturers and their suppliers, partners and dealers around the world, and could be expanded to other industries, the automakers said in a statement. The companies expect to reach a definitive agreement for the venture in the first quarter of 2000.

GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler plan to have equal ownership in the new venture, which will operate as a business independent of the three automakers, the companies said. The supplier exchange is expected to be powered by Oracle Corp. (NasdaqNM:ORCL - news) and Commerce One Inc. (NasdaqNM:CMRC - news), which are also expected to have equity in the venture.
