Cubic Named One of San Diego`s Best Overall Places to Work SAN DIEGO, Feb 21, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- You could credit the corporation`s clubs for skiers, photographers, golfers and others, and a company store that sells and delivers flowers on Valentine`s Day. Or perhaps it`s progressive health benefits choices, such as long-term care, or the "9-80" work schedule that gives employees every-other Friday off. San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX: CUB) has been recognized by the Work-Life Coalition of San Diego as one of the city`s top three 2002 "Leaders in Work-Life." Cubic and the University of California San Diego were runners up to Cox Communications in the coalition`s "Best Overall Place to Work" category for companies with 500 or more employees. Cubic and 75 other San Diego organizations were questioned in detail by the coalition on work-life policies, programs and practices in the largest work-life survey conducted in the area. Top performers received the Work-Life Coalition of San Diego`s "Leaders in Work-Life" awards. "The topic of work-life balance has received considerable attention over the last few years, and the events of September 11 have made this issue more salient," said Virginia Byrd, president of Work-Life Coalition of San Diego. "Many individuals are re-examining their priorities, and many are finding a need to live a more balanced life," she added. Cubic was one of the top three finalists in several categories: "Best General Benefits," which includes medical and 401K plans; "Best Wellness Program," which includes employee assistance, health club benefits and health education seminars; "Best Eldercare Program," a benefits area that includes providing resources and referral and long-term care insurance; and "Best Corporate Work-Life Culture," which includes casual dress, and services such as an onsite company store. (Cubic`s employee store offers drycleaning, film processing, and travel and ticket discounts for more than 75 attractions, hotels and events in Southern California. The company also encourages and organizes community involvement events, generating major participation in charity walks, runs and other fundraisers.) "We are delighted and proud to receive this honor," said Cubic Human Resources Director Barbara Abelin. "Creating human resources programs that meet the changing needs of the workforce is a challenge for any company, particularly a company like ours, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary and rarely takes time to appreciate the things that make it progressive or innovative." Over the years, the company has implemented a number of new benefits. "And what we`ve learned is that the benefits that often mean the most to employees come at little or no cost," Abelin said. Cubic Corp., founded in 1951 by Walter J. Zable, who is still president and CEO, is parent to two major segments, transportation and defense. The Cubic Transportation Systems Group designs and manufactures automatic fare collection systems for public mass transit, including rail and buses throughout the world. The Cubic Defense Group provides instrumented air and ground combat training systems, battle command training simulations, and simulation support for U.S. and allied military forces. The Group also produces high technology avionics, data links and communications products for government and commercial customers and provides a wide range of technical and logistics services.
