Cubic Earns Fourth Consecutive ``Maximum Performance Bonus`` for Outstanding Service to U.S. Air Force SAN DIEGO, Mar 7, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- For the fourth time in a row, the U.S. Air Force has awarded its maximum performance bonus to San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX: CUB) for outstanding service of air crews at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. The bonuses, each worth $50,000, are for contractor logistics support for the Kadena Interim Training System, also known as "KITS." Cubic has provided the service since 1997, when the company completed installation of the air combat training system. "The monetary value of the award is not significant when you look at the corporation`s total profits," said Dick Koon, president of Cubic Worldwide Technical Services, which works with Cubic Defense Systems -- both part of Cubic`s Defense Group -- to provide the logistics support. "But these awards mean a lot to us. They represent our company`s values and our commitment to provide service that consistently exceeds our customers` expectations." KITS is the U.S. military`s first "untethered" or portable air combat training system. It consists of 12-foot training "pods," which look like missiles and are fastened under the wings of fighter jets. The pods contain electronics that track and record the pilot`s tactical and weapon employment performance during air combat training missions. The technology allows the pilots, upon completing their training missions, to review and analyze their performance on computer display systems, also developed by Cubic. The Air Force evaluates Cubic`s performance on the service contract every six months. The February award came as Cubic`s Kadena-based crew completed its biggest month ever, simultaneously completing deployments in Osan, Korea, Thailand and Singapore, as well as supporting training at the Kadena Air Base. In January, the crew supported more than 1,200 sorties and had the highest percentage of operational pods ever -- 48 of 49 pods operational. John Howard, the Cubic site manager at Kadena, noted that his crew set a record for the most sorties supported in one day -- 109; and the most sorties supported in one month, 1,208; and the longest deployment to date -- 35 days at Osan AB. "Our job is to keep air combat training pods available for customer use whenever needed," said Barry Marks, Asia regional manager, Cubic Worldwide Technical Services. "We have always been serious about our mission, and with the current war on terrorism, the work we do is more important than ever." Cubic Defense Systems and Cubic Worldwide Technical Services are part of the Cubic Defense Group, which provides instrumented air and ground combat training systems, battle command training simulations, and simulation support for U.S. and allied military forces. The Group also produces high technology avionics, data links and communications products for government and commercial customers and provides a wide range of technical and logistics services. The Cubic Transportation Systems Group, Cubic`s other major segment, designs and manufactures automatic fare collection systems for public mass transit, including rail and buses throughout the world.
