Cubic Introduces New Combat Search-and-Rescue Product Line to International Avionics Community SAN DIEGO & LONDON, Mar 13, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cubic Defense Applications Group, a major segment of Cubic Corp. (AMEX: CUB), has introduced an advanced Combat Search-and-Rescue (CSAR) product line that uses global positioning satellite technology, two-way voice communications and digital moving maps to locate downed or missing pilots. The avionics hardware and software package was unveiled to the international avionics community at the SAR 2002 Conference & Exhibition -- the world`s leading search-and-rescue event, held March 12-13 at Brighton, U.K. The system consists of two main components: the Survivor Tracking and Recovery (STAR) guidance system, which is located inside the rescue helicopter; and the compatible URX 3000 handheld survival radio/transponder, which is carried by the survivors. "The need for a complete, interoperable system has never been greater with the continued threats facing aircrews around the world. Cubic`s package is designed to increase survivability for those pilots shot down within hostile territory. It is the first complete CSAR system that requires only a single interrogation to determine the exact location of one or several survivors," said Rick Lober, senior vice president of Cubic`s Communications Business Unit. The package evolved from the Cubic-developed AN/ARS-6(V) Personnel Locator System, the standard search-and-rescue avionics system for the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy and NATO. The airborne STAR system can be configured for both military and civilian search-and-rescue missions. It displays the survivor`s position as an icon on a moving map, or via a digitized compass on the control display panel. STAR can store multiple survivor identification codes and frequencies, allowing rescue crews to locate several survivors in a single mission. It also uses encoded burst transmissions for secure communications between the survivor and rescue aircraft. The system is designed for simple installation aboard search-and-rescue helicopters. No system calibration or alignment is needed on the aircraft. The URX 3000 GPS radio, introduced earlier in the year works with both STAR and Cubic`s AN/ARS-6(V) guidance system. It is smaller, lighter and has better range performance than any other survival radio. It features 12-channel GPS for precise location; secure data transmissions; one million ID codes; and 3,000 UHF channels. Cubic Defense Applications Group produces instrumented air and ground combat training systems, battle command training, simulations and simulation support for U.S. and allied military forces. The group also produces high technology avionics, data links and communications products for government and commercial customers, and a wide range of technical and logistics services. The corporation`s other major segment, Cubic Transportation Systems, designs and manufactures automatic fare collection systems for public mass transit authorities. |
