...NASA’s administrator said Thursday that it was inappropriate for SpaceX founder Elon Musk to smoke marijuana on a podcast earlier this year, and that the incident “did not inspire confidence.”

The pot-smoking incident in September reportedly irked NASA officials, and earlier this month the space agency ordered a safety review of SpaceX and Boeing Co. to evaluate the companies’ workplace cultures, “including the adherence to a drug-free environment.” The companies are working with NASA to develop a replacement for the space shuttle to send American astronauts to the International Space Station.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, NASA chief Jim Bridenstine said he had personally ordered the review, and added he had spoken to Musk recently and expected no further problems.

“I will tell you, he is as committed to safety as anybody, and he understands that that was not appropriate behavior, and you won’t be seeing that again,” Bridenstine said, according to The Atlantic.

While it was unclear how Musk’s smoking directly affected rocket safety, Bridenstine called the assessments a “necessary and appropriate step when you’re launching humans on rockets.”

Recreational marijuana smoking is legal in California, but illegal under federal law. As a Republican congressman from Oklahoma, Bridenstine had a “hard-on-drugs” stance, according to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Law, and on at least two occasions voted against pro-medical-marijuana bills...
