Crude Oil Falls After Report of Large Gain in U.S.
Inventories
By Mark Shenk

New York, April 3 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil fell for the first time in six sessions
after the American Petroleum Institute reported that U.S. inventories had their
biggest weekly gain in 11 months.

The increase came as tankers made deliveries to Houston- area refineries after
being delayed by fog in late March. Prices still were up about 8 percent from a
week ago as violence between Israel and the Palestinians spurred concern that
Middle East supplies might be disrupted.

``Prices fell after the inventory report, though with the unsettled Middle East we
aren`t getting as dramatic a move down as one might have expected,`` said Abe
Glass, president of Glass Futures Corp., an energy brokerage in New York.

Crude oil for May delivery was 22 cents lower at $27.49 a barrel in midday trading
on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Prices fell as much as 56 cents, or 2
percent, to $27.15 in earlier trading. Oil yesterday rose to $28.10, the highest
price since Sept. 18.

In London, crude oil for May settlement fell as much as 86 cents, or 3.1 percent,
to $26.80 a barrel on the International Petroleum Exchange. The contract was
recently down 43 cents.

Oil prices rebounded from the day`s lows after the Associated Press and other
news services reported that Egypt will limit diplomatic contacts with Israel. Egypt
and Jordan are the only Arab states with embassies in Israel.

Israel today expanded its West Bank offensive in a campaign that has confined
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to his office in Ramallah since Friday, news
reports said.

Inventory Increase

U.S. inventories of crude oil rose 6.5 million barrels, or 2.1 percent, to 322 million
barrels in the week ended Friday, the highest level since June, the institute`s
report showed. The delay in tanker deliveries caused a decline of 6.2 million
barrels in last week`s report.

The jump in oil supplies has ``taken some steam out of the rally,`` said Chester
Irvin, a crude-oil broker at ABN Amro Inc. in New York. Prices had been rising as
tensions in the Middle East escalated, not because of the fundamentals of
supply and demand, he said.

Gasoline inventories rose 3.87 million barrels, or 1.9 percent, to 209 million
barrels, the first rise in six weeks, the institute said. Supplies were 8.7 percent
higher than year- earlier levels.

Gasoline futures for May delivery fell as much as 2.78 cents, or 3.2 percent, to
84.2 cents a gallon in New York. Prices reached 87.4 cents a gallon during
trading yesterday, the highest price since June 18. Futures prices, which
represent wholesale markets, have risen 49 percent this year.

Pump prices have jumped 23 percent since the end of February, reaching a
nationwide average $1.371 a gallon in the week ended Monday, according to an
Energy Department survey of filling stations.

Norway, which this year reduced its output in support of an OPEC effort to boost
prices, expects to increase oil production in July and may act sooner if oil prices
reach $30 a barrel, Oil Minister Einar Steensnaes said in a telephone interview.

Norway is the world`s third-largest oil exporter after Saudi Arabia and Russia.

OPEC Discipline

The increase in U.S. stockpiles came as OPEC discipline in limiting supplies
waned last month. The 10 nations bound by quotas pumped 1.1 million barrels a
day more than promised in March, the second-highest level of overproduction
since June 2000, according to Bloomberg estimates.

At the start of the year, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries
reduced its output ceiling for the nations bound by the accord to 21.7 million
barrels a day, the lowest level in a decade, to boost prices.

``If Israel pulls out of the Palestinian territories you would automatically see
prices fall $1.50,`` Irvin said. ``If there is further escalation involving Lebanon and
Syria we could see a rise of up to $5.``
