Deutsche Bank, UniCredit Start Brexit Swaps Move Out of London

(Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Bank AG and UniCredit SpA moved some of their swaps trades from London to Frankfurt in May as banks used a lull in the ongoing Brexit drama to prepare for the worst.

About 10 banks took part in a switching run where lenders closed existing swaps positions in the U.K. and opened equivalent ones in Germany, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because the trades are private. Some of the 10, including JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Commerzbank AG, acted as market makers, treating the exercise as an opportunity to generate revenue by trading with the banks.

Deutsche Bank and UniCredit declined to comment, as did spokespeople for JPMorgan and Commerzbank. Bayerische Landesbank, which also shifted some swaps to Frankfurt, and the Bank of England, LCH’s primary regulator, also declined to comment. ...

Earlier, Washington ripped up waivers enabling major importers of Iranian crude oil, including Turkey, to continue their imports as part of its strategy of "maximum pressure" aimed at crippling the Iranian economy.

Iran and Turkey are working on a new gas trade mechanism to enable the two countries to resist US sanctions pressure, Iranian Ambassador to Turkey Mohammad Farazmand said, the Islamic Republic News Agency has reported, citing an interview by the ambassador with Turkish television.

"Iran exports a large volume of gas to Turkey and we need a new mechanism to be created to ease financial transactions via our national currencies," Farazmand said. "We are [in] the process of establishing a joint bank as well," he added.

Accusing the Trump administration of waging "economic terrorism" affecting the rights of both Iran and Turkey, Farazmand noted that "all countries are entitled to develop common trade ties with one another, and nothing illegal has been done in this regard. The cooperation is not meant to bypass the US sanctions."
