Without any formal processes to make room for younger staff, employers resort to managing out people whose experience could prove more useful than bosses necessarily anticipate.

Many traders and bankers who are currently considered to be in their prime, for example, have never experienced tougher market conditions.

Denise Shull, a performance coach and former trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the futures exchange, warned that a markets business full of young people carries an inherent financial risk. None of these juniors will have ever traded through a full-blown financial crisis.

“The markets have gone more or less straight up for 10 years. That means there are a lot of people who have never seen a real bear market like the one that lasted from 2000 to 2002,” said Shull, an expert in the psychology of trading.

Shiret said that when Credit Suisse fired him, he felt that despite his age, he was just as good as he was 20 years ago.

He said: “They are really trying to create space for people coming up the ranks, but it should be merit-based. It’s difficult because I feel I’m just as effective as I ever was. I don’t think age determines performance.”
