According to early results of the district council election in Hong Kong, the pro-Beijing Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) managed to secure only 42 seats on 452-member District Council compared to 292 seats it held before the election.

Meanwhile, pro-democratic candidates appeared to have seized control of 12 out of 18 districts, claiming 278 out of 452 district council seats, early results suggested. Also, the pro-democracy bloc is on track to take around 120 seats on the 1,200-member election committee in charge of choosing the city's chief executive.

Independents, who are supported by neither the democratic nor the pro-establishment camp, won 24 seats.

The election marked the first time that each seat on the Council was fought over by candidates from at least two opposing parties given that in 2015 as many as 68 candidates ran unopposed. The poll also recorded a record-breaking voter turnout with over 70% of voters casting a ballot.
