DRD bucks trend to create 2 500 new jobs

Johannesburg - Durban Roodepoort Deep (DRD), the country`s fourth-largest gold producer, has bucked the labour-slashing trend seen in the gold industry by aiming to create more than 2 500 new mining jobs within two years.

DRD surprised the market by reporting that it lost R4.8 million, or 3c a share, in the quarter to March after R56.4 million in profit of the previous quarter.
While the company`s cash on hand increased by R81.7 million to R206.9 million during the quarter, it used R64.5 million to bring down the amount of gold it had hedged to less than 400 000 ounces.
