Dish Network Corp. (Nasdaq: DISH) has confirmed to Denver Business Journal that it has laid off employees because of the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus.

“Due to the current economic climate, combined with changing needs of our customers and how we best serve them, Dish has made the difficult decision to reevaluate our organization," the company said in a statement. "This includes a focused set of staffing reductions to align our workforce with the current and future needs of the business. It is not a step we took lightly. Our goal is to best serve our Dish and Sling customers, position the company to support our future wireless aspirations, and create long-term opportunity for our teams.”

Dish declined to specify how many employees were impacted. The company has about 4,000 employees in the Denver area and 16,000 worldwide, according to DBJ research.

Dish not worried about funding for Boost, 5G network
by Monica Alleven | May 7, 2020 7:41pm

COVID-19 is wreaking havoc on Dish Network’s existing business, but it’s not backing off plans to build a greenfield 5G network that it intends to make the envy of the world.

Dish’s access to the financial markets has been a big question mark as the COVID-19 crisis took hold and sent financial markets into a tizzy. But Dish indicated on the company’s quarterly conference call on Thursday that over the past 13 months, it has paid down $2.5 billion in debt and raised $1 billion in equity, and it continues to generate a fair amount of cash flow.

“The funding part is not the thing that’s keeping us up at night,” said Dish Chairman and co-founder Charlie Ergen during the call.

T-Mobile adds 452K postpaid subs in Q1
by Monica Alleven | May 7, 2020 11:49am

T-Mobile reported what it described as another record-setting quarter, adding 452,000 branded postpaid phone net additions in the first quarter of 2020 as the company scrambled to close retail stores and arrange work-from-home conditions for the majority of employees.

CEO Mike Sievert on T-Mobile’s earnings call on Wednesday acknowledged right off the bat that it was a “crazy quarter,” with all that was going on. T-Mobile closed its merger with Sprint on April 1 after about two years of fighting for regulatory approvals.
